Does Gelacy add hreflang tags to my store?

This is a common question from merchants running multilingual Shopify stores.

Gelacy helps you translate and localize your content, but it does not generate or manage hreflang tags directly. Hreflang tags are automatically handled by Shopify when multiple languages are published on your store.

How hreflang tags are generated

Shopify includes built-in international SEO functionality for stores that use multiple languages and markets.

After you publish additional languages through Shopify Markets, Shopify automatically creates:

  • Hreflang tags
  • Canonical URLs
  • Language-specific URLs
  • International sitemaps

These elements help search engines identify the relationship between translated versions of the same page and deliver the most relevant language to visitors.

For example:

  • English: /products/shirt
  • French: /fr/products/shirt
  • German: /de/products/shirt

Shopify automatically associates these URLs using hreflang tags, allowing search engines to understand that they are localized versions of the same content.

How Gelacy contributes to multilingual SEO

While Shopify manages the technical SEO structure, Gelacy helps ensure the content itself is properly localized.

Using Gelacy, you can translate:

  • Product pages
  • Collection pages
  • Store pages
  • Blog articles
  • Meta titles and meta descriptions
  • URL handles
  • Navigation menus and other storefront content

Once your translations are published, Shopify automatically connects the translated pages and applies the appropriate hreflang tags.

Things to keep in mind

No additional setup is required within Gelacy for hreflang tags.

As long as your target languages are enabled and published in Shopify Markets, Shopify will automatically generate and maintain the necessary hreflang tags for your store.

What if I need custom hreflang settings?

Advanced hreflang customization is not managed through Gelacy.

If your store requires custom hreflang implementations, modified canonical URLs, or other technical SEO configurations, these changes will need to be made within Shopify or through custom development.
